Auchenflower Cottage + Tower House

The Auchenflower House finished in 2018 was one of those special projects that are possible when you have a trusting client. One of the aspects of a successful residential project is how it not only creates a great home for the clients but also contributes to the city both in its form, and by demonstrating an alternative strategy for modifying and extended a humble inner city cottage.

The project sensitively adjusted and added to the cottage to create a flexible family home whilst maintaining the generous garden. The journey through the house is an orchestrated journey through a series of dramatic gardens spaces and outdoor rooms. Importantly the humble original cottage was not made into the poor cousin or enveloped to the point where it could no longer be recognised, but rather adjusted and grafted onto in a way that brought out its latent but previously lost potential. The final layer of course is the clients turning a project into a home. In this case it has been special to see our wonderful clients effortlessly make the house an extension of themselves.

The entry upstairs to the original cottage is a folded compact origami like steel stair. The cottage is propped with a series of living spaces in its centre that are flanked by the kitchen to one side and library nook and study to the other. At the rear of the cottage is the sunken courtyard garden that separates the new terrace with bedroom tower over accessed via a narrow link bridge.
