Hawthorne House

This extension to a Californian Bungalow house addressed the clients' needs for a stronger relationship to the back yard and increased living space. The new living room was created by plugging a strong contemporary ‘box’ onto the rear of the house which projects the interior into the garden.

The strategy of not simply extending the existing roof form enabled the new room to have generous proportions and ceiling heights as well as making an appropriate setting for the clients’ collection of modern furniture. A second more ‘nest’ like deck space immediately outside the dining/ kitchen area was provided with a built in seat for outdoor living. The connection to the garden was further reinforced by mounding the lawn up to the house.

As the living spaces were at the rear of the house the entry sequence for visitors was radically altered to change the remaining areas of the house from a thorough fair to more useful space. The front stair was removed and a new walkway down the side of the house was created with a gatehouse signalling the new entry from the street.
